I spent eight years of my life in Taiwan. Every day when I lived there I took the lift, pushing the bottom button to indicate "ground floor." Next to the button, there was the Chinese character for "ground floor." One day somebody made fun of me, asking if I could draw that character. I couldn’t. So, how, do Chinese people memorise 4,000 characters on average? The answer is that they see meaning in each "drawing" -- each character evolves from another and there is a story and logic behind them.
To be a good Tarot reader you have to understand the five different stories Tarot cards tell us: the stories of life and human nature. A bit of knowledge in numerology is useful as well, as is understanding archetypes. But we know those through our innate wisdom, imprinted on us. We just have to find a way to reveal them.
For every human action, there is a spiritual version of it. For stretching, we have yoga, for fighting, martial arts, for drumming, taiko drumming, for massage, shiatsu massage, for sex, tantric sex and so on. The same goes for Tarot reading. To perform the consciously spiritual part of it, we must read it at least mindfully and be fully in in touch with integrity, impartiality, and so on. Only then can it happen that we channel our readings.
Most people who are looking for a Tarot reader are going through trauma, heartbreak, grief, or other sad circumstances. Sometimes people appear at my place for confirmation of a previous happy reading. It seems sometimes that they had been taken advantage of. It is so easy for that to happen because of their temporary state of vulnerability and powerlessness.
There are many online businesses based on neurolinguistic programming (NLP) that use well-designed templates, promising a great outcome and suggesting the next expensive steps. However, taking advantage of someone’s misery doesn’t create good karma. Reading the Tarot should be a spiritual practice, not a business venture.
Tarot is not only about good news, but about providing great comfort and the best advice in any situation. We all need consolation and solace sometimes.
There are my two favourite quotations from Dr. Michael Ryce:
"True spiritual teachers, the priesthood, use the Spiritual teachings to liberate people from their pain and the habits which produce pain and suffering."
"False teachers, the priestcraft, use the Spiritual teachings deviously. Under the guise of promise to save or liberate people from present or future pain and suffering, they use the threat and fear tactics to draw people deeper into their trauma."
